Graduate Academic Good Standing

The standards outlined below apply to all graduate students enrolled at the University, including those who entered under a previous catalog.

Graduate students must maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher, which is the minimum required for graduation. Additionally, graduate students must also have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher on all graduate coursework attempted at Texas A&M- Victoria to graduate. A student is subject to scholastic review during any term or session in which they attempt one or more semester credit hours. Combined sessions and/or terms are treated as a single unit equivalent to one term.

The cumulative GPA is calculated based only on graduate-level coursework completed at Texas A&M-Victoria for which grade point values are assigned. If a course is repeated, only the grade and credit hours from the most recent attempt will be included in the GPA calculation.

Graduate students may not earn grades of D or F on any courses included in their degree plan. These grades must be replaced by retaking the course, and the original grade will not count toward degree requirements. In addition, students may apply no more than two grades of C toward their degree plan.

A student who:

  • earns more than two grades of C, or
  • earns a single grade of D or F

will be placed on academic probation and may be subject to suspension or dismissal from the program.

Transient/Visiting Students

Students enrolled as transient or visiting students are not subject to academic probation or suspension. However, if they later matriculate into a Texas A&M- Victoria graduate program as regular students, all grades earned during their transient status will be factored into their cumulative GPA.

Financial Aid vs. Academic Standing

Financial aid probation or suspension is separate from academic probation or suspension. For questions about financial aid eligibility, students should consult the Financial Aid section or contact the Financial Aid Office directly.

Academic Probation for Graduate Students

Graduate students will be placed on academic probation if:

  • their cumulative GPA falls below 3.0, or
  • they earn more than two grades of C, or
  • they receive one grade of D or F.

Students placed on academic probation must meet with their academic advisor to develop a plan for academic improvement. Continued enrollment will depend on demonstrating satisfactory academic progress.

Graduate Removal from Academic Probation

Students will be removed from academic probation when:

  • their cumulative GPA is raised to 3.0 or higher, and
  • they have no more than two grades of C applied toward their degree plan. D’s and F’s will not be applied toward degree plan.

Students who have earned three grades of C must retake at least one of the C classes and earn a grade of B or higher (no more than 2 C grades are allowed to graduate). Students who have earned any D or F, must retake those courses and earn higher grades before being eligible for removal from probation.

Academic Suspension for Graduate Students

Graduate students that are on probation may be placed on academic suspension if they:

  • fail to earn a semester GPA of at least 3.0 while on probation, or
  • maintain more than two grades of C (or any D or F).

Suspension is intended to provide time for students to reassess their academic goals and determine readiness to return to graduate study.

Readmission After Graduate Academic Suspension

Readmission after suspension is not automatic or guaranteed. Students must follow the appropriate procedure based on the number of suspensions:

  • First Suspension:
The student must sit out one full long semester (fall or spring). Early return may be requested by submitting an Academic Appeal to their academic college (via eForms).
  • Second Suspension:
The student must sit out one full academic year (12 months). A written appeal with a supporting letter must be submitted to the academic college.
  • Third and Final Suspension:
The student must sit out three full years. Readmission requires submitting an appeal to the Academic Appeals Committee using the Records Appeal Form, and any early return must be approved in writing by the Provost (Provost@tamuv.edu).
