Grade Points and GPA
Grade points are assigned as follows:
- A = 4 grade points per semester credit hour
- B = 3 grade points per semester credit hour
- C = 2 grade points per semester credit hour
- D = 1 grade point per semester credit hour
- F = 0 grade points per semester credit hour
The grade point average (GPA) is based only on coursework taken for credit at Texas A&M University-Victoria.
The GPA is calculated by dividing total grade points earned by total semester credit hours attempted.
Grades of I, IP, NG, W, S, and U are not included in GPA calculations.
Incomplete Grade (I)
The grade of I (Incomplete) is a temporary grade assigned when a student is passing a course but is unable to complete a relatively small portion of the course requirements due to circumstances beyond the student’s control.
Students must make arrangements with the instructor of record to complete the remaining course requirements. Students should not re-register for the course to remove the Incomplete.
It is the responsibility of the student to complete the required coursework and initiate resolution of the Incomplete. Upon completion, the instructor of record must submit a grade change through the Faculty Center.
The grade of I must be resolved within one year of the date assigned. If the Incomplete is not resolved within this period, it will automatically convert to a grade of F (or U for courses graded S/U), unless an extension is approved by the appropriate academic authority (e.g., dean or designee) with the consent of the instructor and documented through the Office of the Registrar and Student Records.
The instructor of record is responsible for assigning the final grade. Changes to an Incomplete grade may be made only by the instructor of record, except in documented extraordinary circumstances.
Any Incomplete grade not resolved by the date of graduation will be treated as a grade of F for purposes of determining graduation eligibility.
Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U)
The Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading option is used for designated courses.
- S (Satisfactory) indicates achievement equivalent to a grade of C or higher
- U (Unsatisfactory) indicates performance below a grade of C
Grades of S and U are not included in GPA calculations.
Withdrawal (W)
A grade of W (Withdrawal) indicates that a student has officially withdrawn from a course.
The grade of W is not included in GPA calculations.
Students are subject to state regulations regarding course drop limits.
If a grade of W is assigned prior to a finding of academic dishonesty, the student remains subject to the Academic Honesty Policy. Outcomes of that process may include the assignment of a grade of F, which would replace the W.
Grade Changes
The instructor of record is responsible for assigning final grades.
Grade changes may be submitted by the instructor of record through the Faculty Center in myUHV. Changes to posted grades are permitted only to:
- correct errors,
- resolve grades of Incomplete, or
- implement the outcome of an approved grade appeal in accordance with the Student Handbook.
All grade changes must be submitted within one year of the end of the semester in which the grade was originally assigned.
Grade appeals are reviewed and approved in accordance with the Student Handbook. If approved, the grade change must be submitted by the instructor of record or appropriate academic authority and will be processed by the Student Records Office.
Additional approvals may be required in accordance with university procedures.
