Students are expected to attend all scheduled class meetings and participate in course activities, including online courses as defined by the instructor.
The university does not recognize a set number of excused absences. Attendance requirements and expectations, including what constitutes attendance in online courses, are established by the instructor and communicated in the course syllabus.
Students are responsible for monitoring their attendance and for communicating with the instructor regarding any absences.
A student whose absences are determined by the instructor to be excessive may be subject to academic penalties, including being dropped from the course or assigned a final grade of “W” or “F,” as appropriate.
Failure to attend or participate in a course may impact a student’s academic progress and financial aid eligibility.
Official Absences
Absences resulting from participation in a university-sponsored activity are considered official when approved in advance by the appropriate university authority.
Students are responsible for notifying instructors of official absences and for completing all missed coursework within a reasonable timeframe as determined by the instructor.
Absences Due to Religious Holy Days
Texas A&M University-Victoria respects the religious observances of students that may conflict with class meetings, assignments, or examinations. A&M-Victoria will excuse a student from attending classes or other required activities, including examinations, for the observance of a religious holy day, including travel for that purpose.
A student whose absence is excused under this policy will be provided a reasonable opportunity to complete missed work and examinations in accordance with course policies.
Students must notify instructors in writing of anticipated absences for religious holy days early in the semester to allow for appropriate planning. Instructors must provide a reasonable timeframe for completing missed work and should outline expectations in the course syllabus.
If a student and instructor disagree regarding the absence or the timeframe for completing missed work, either party may submit a written appeal to the appropriate Academic Dean or designee. The decision of the Dean or designee is final.
The state law regarding religious holy days may be found in the Texas Education Code, Section 51.911.
